Telegraph: The Greek Government to Ban the Construction of New Hotels in Santorini Authorities plan to suspend all building permits in the caldera zone of Santorini, where hordes of tourists gather to pose for sunset photos. Santorini, home to 25,000 residents, is overwhelmed by 3.4 million tourists each year, a situation contributing to environmental degradation and water shortages. The issue of overtourism came to the forefront last month when a tour guide shared images of throngs of tourists disembarking in Santorini, packed shoulder to shoulder along narrow streets between the whitewashed houses. The growing number of visitors to Santorini is part of a larger trend throughout Greece, with projections for 2024 expected to surpass last year’s record of 33 million arrivals. The ban on new buildings along the caldera also responds to calls from the mayor of Santorini for action.
Property Purchase in Santorini – Special exception for NON EU Citizens Santorini– Special exception for NON EU Citizens : Santorini is at the same status as the Greek borders. For this reason, there is one additional requirement only for non-European citizens. The potential non European investor must first get a permit from the authorities, that he/she is allowed to purchase a property in Santorini. This permission is given only for a specific property, it is not a general one. Your lawyer will submit the necessary documents to the authorities requesting permission (CV, permanent residence, occupation etc) along with the property documents. This process takes from 1-3 months. Then you can proceed in purchase.
