The project is located in Mesaria, on the island of Santorini. Located on a slope, the plot offers an uninterrupted view of Anafi Island, the settlement of Pyrgos and the Aegean Archipelago. The climatic conditions are typical to the Cycladic islands, mild winters and summers, high humidity and heavy winds on winter.
On the outside the 2 building appear as a compound of smaller volumes, with small openings (for protection against heat and strong winds), traditional Santorinean vaulted roofs, staircases, and terraces surrounded by stone guardrails, referencing the old fortified settlements. Ruins of a former structure were found on site, such as an arch, a cistern, a well and stones all of which we integrated into the current design.
The project is consisted of two semi-detached houses (140sqm exh). The main entrance to the houses is through the old municipal street. A four-piece ladder, on the north side, leads to the ground level yard of the first house and an old preserved stone staircase on the east side leads to the yard of the second house.
The two houses are developed in a similar layout on the ground and first floor. Inspired by plans of a traditional Santorinean house, the ground floor is quite narrow and deep. The living areas are at the front side of the house and the bedroom is at the back. A small kitchen is tucked at the side of the main living space, along with the dining area and the staircase. The two rooms are divided by a wall which looks like a replication of the façade. It has the same openings, allowing the back bedroom to be indirectly illuminated and ventilated by the front. It is a typical artifice in Cycladic architecture for protection against the climatic conditions, which helps to preserve the same temperature throughout the year. The first floor follows the same design, with the slight difference that there is no kitchen and dining area but instead a small private terrace.
Some of the most interesting elements of the structure appear on the excavated underground levels. The old preserved stone arch is an entrance to the residence on the north side of the plot. It creates a private parking space which leads to the ancillary spaces of the house. The underground level of the second house unfolds through a group of preserved old caves and completes its route on a small private pool, at the same spot where the old water storage used to be. The well of the ground floor is converted into a skylight for the pool.
