Oia is a scenic village on the northwest edge of the Santorini island within the Cyclades. It extends for almost 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) along the northern edge of the caldera that forms the island of Santorini, at a height of between 70 and 100 metres (230 and 330 ft) above sea level.
Immediately to the east is Phinikia, and about 500 metres (550 yd) to the north is Tholos. The small fishing village of Ormos Armeni lies below Oia to the south and is reached via steps. There is a ferry connection to Therasia from the harbour village of Ormos Ammoudi to the west. There are 300 steps down to the port from Oia. The small island of Agios Nikolaos lies to the southwest.
It is packed every day, by thousands of tourists who arrive during the season for the “out of this world” views of the caldera.
The houses are built one on top of the other, the courtyard of the house above being the roof of the house below.
The sunset of Caldera is a pole of attraction and it is famous all over the world.
Visitors fill the narrow streets and then swarm around the castle ruins. The readers of the famous Conde Nast Traveller Magazine have voted in 2013 Santorini as the number one island in Europe.
